But the sport as we know it began to surface in the 1800s, when competitive swimming began in England.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swimming first became an Olympic sport in 1896, when four events were contested in the Athens games \u2014&nbsp;100-meter, 500-meter, and 1200-meter freestyle and 100&nbsp;meters for sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while most of us won\u2019t be world-class swimmers, we can still enjoy the sport.
